Low Energy Buildings Network
- Smart Building Energy Management System with Battery-Boosted EV Charging for Peak Demand Reduction in Existing Buildings
Electric vehicle (EV) adoption is accelerating across APEC economies, with implications that are particularly pronounced within the context of existing building. A single DC quick charger (e.g. 150 kW) can instantly double the peak electrical demand of a medium-sized commercial building, while a cluster of four superchargers (e.g. 360 kW each) can impose a load exceeding 1.4 MW, which frequently exceeds the building’s original electrical de-sign capacity. As a result, property owners seeking to install significant EV charging infrastructure must often pursue comprehensive electrical upgrades, including new transformers, switch-gear, cabling, and revised utility service agreements. However, these upgrades typically cost over several million and require 18 to 24 months to complete. In this connection, for older buildings, heritage structures, and properties in dense urban environments, such enhancements may be physically infeasible due to space limitations, structural constraints, or bottlenecks in the utility distribution network.

- Energy Saving Projects in YOHO MALL Series
Background,The YOHO series shopping centers consist of YOHO MALL I, YOHO, YOHO MALL II, YOHO MIX, and YOHO PLUS, with a total floor area of approx. 1.2 million square feet at Yuen Long, N.T, HKSAR, China. We are dedicated to providing a high-quality business environment and customer service experience while actively promoting environmental protection. We have set an environmental goal at 13% saving in 10 years starting from 2019 as a baseline. We have implemented various energy-saving projects for different E&M systems. From 2019 to the end of 2025, 8% (Approx. 1,964MWh) of electricity consumption has been saved for the YOHO series shopping centers. This demonstrates that our energy-saving projects are highly effective. Therefore, we would like to share our energy-smart projects through The 2026 ESCI Best Practices Awards Program, in order to contribute for creating energy-smart communities and protecting the environment.

- V city: AI Cloud-Based Energy Network for Existing Commercial Buildings, Integrating Renewables and Community Safety
1. Project Vision and Features,V city is a flagship shopping mall developed by Sun Hung Kai Properties in Tuen Mun and managed by Kai Shing Management Services Limited. Offering over 140 renowned stores and restaurants, the mall exemplifies not only a high quality, diverse retail experience but also outstanding energy efficiency, active community engagement, and operational innovation, as recognized by multiple prestigious accolades. Through these impactful initiatives, V city aims to build a truly sustainable, resilient, and replicable low energy building network, setting a benchmark for transforming high density commercial buildings in Hong Kong.,To align with Hong Kong's Climate Action Blueprint 2050, V city proactively advances its ESG goals through innovative smart technology and sustainable practices. Recently, the mall upgraded its chillers to highly energy efficient models. These systems use environmentally friendly, low GWP refrigerants and advanced AI-powered optimization systems. These efforts have resulted in V city ranking in the top 10% for energy performance among similar properties. It has also earned the BEAM Plus EB V2.0 certification, solidifying its leadership in sustainability in the retail sector.,2. Technological Innovation and Green System Integration,2.1. AI-Driven Optimization and Efficiency,V city’s operational strategy centers on an advanced, cloud-based AI Chiller Plant Optimization Energy Management System. This marks a significant step forward in intelligent building management. It analyzes live sensor data to optimize chiller sequencing, setpoints, flow rates, and cooling tower operations, ensuring that the Mechanical, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (MVAC) system, the building’s largest energy consumer—operates at peak efficiency under varying occupancy and weather conditions. The system analyzes live sensor data to optimize chiller sequencing, setpoints, flow rates, and cooling tower operations. This ensures the Mechanical, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (MVAC) system operates efficiently under varying occupancy and weather conditions. Its intelligence relies on a comprehensive IoT sensor network for both air conditioning and lighting. Real-time CO₂ data enables demand-based ventilation. The system adjusts fresh air supply to match occupancy. Continuous monitoring and analytics detect anomalies, anticipate maintenance needs, and recommend schedules based on equipment performance. This predictive approach helps the engineering team shift from reactive to proactive maintenance. They address issues early and plan interventions before failures occur.
- Intelligent Transformation of Heating Projects
At present, traditional heating stations are located in remote areas, and their operation and maintenance (O&M) work is confronted with three core challenges.
- New Taipei City Energy-efficient E-House and E-Housekeeper Project – Helping People Choose Energy-Efficient Houses
New Taipei City has identified building decarbonization as a key component of its 2050 net-zero pathway. The city released its first Voluntary Local Review (VLR) in 2019, formally announced the 2050 net-zero target in 2021, and published its Pathway to Net-Zero Emissions in August 2022, gradually establishing its local net-zero governance framework. In October 2022, New Taipei City officially became a coal-free city in line with its commitment to the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA), marking an important milestone in its net-zero transition. In terms of greenhouse gas emissions, the residential and commercial sector accounts for about 42% of total emissions, highlighting the importance of reducing emissions from buildings as a key local climate priority. To address this challenge, the city has adopted three core strategies—energy-saving monitoring, energy-saving retrofitting, and zero-carbon electricity—based on a whole-life-cycle approach to building management.
