Key Technologies and Demonstration Applications of Photovoltaic–Energy Storage Integrated Intelligent Microgrids for Energy Saving and Carbon Reduction in High Energy-Consuming Enterprises

Posted:04/24/2026Last Modified:04/24/2026

Project Background:
High energy-consuming industries such as building materials, cement, and steel are important pillars of the national economy, while also being key sectors for energy consumption and carbon emissions. Against the backdrop of intensifying global climate change and China’s “dual-carbon” goals, high energy-consuming enterprises are facing dual pressures from rising energy costs and increasingly stringent carbon emission constraints. Energy conservation and carbon reduction have therefore become inevitable requirements for enhancing competitiveness and achieving sustainable development. However, these industries are typically characterized by continuous production processes, large-scale loads, strong load fluctuations, and stringent power quality requirements. Traditional energy-saving approaches are insufficient to support deep carbon reduction. There is an urgent need to develop energy-saving and carbon-reduction technologies that can enable large-scale, low-cost, and highly reliable utilization of renewable energy, while being deeply integrated with existing production systems.

Key Technologies:
This project investigates a photovoltaic–energy storage integrated system tailored for high energy-consuming enterprises, providing a practical implementation pathway and demonstration for achieving energy conservation and carbon reduction. Based on the energy consumption characteristics of such enterprises, the project utilizes idle rooftop and land resources within industrial facilities to deploy distributed photovoltaic power generation systems and energy storage systems, enabling coordinated operation of photovoltaics and storage. In parallel, an enterprise-level energy management system is implemented to build an integrated smart energy system encompassing “source–grid–load–storage”.
In addition, the project introduces the “PV–storage–direct current–flexibility (PV–Storage–DC–Flexible)” technology. By leveraging energy storage systems to establish a DC microgrid, the direct current generated by photovoltaics is supplied directly to DC loads—such as lighting and air-conditioning systems—through the storage system. This approach reduces energy losses caused by multiple AC/DC conversions, improves the utilization efficiency of renewable energy, and directly lowers electricity costs and carbon emissions for enterprises.

Innovations:

1. Innovation in the Technical Framework:
This project establishes an integrated “source–grid–load–storage” smart energy system for high energy-consuming enterprises, supported by an enterprise-level energy management system. Through a storage-integrated intelligent Energy Management System (EMS), multidimensional information—such as time-of-use electricity price signals, variations in production load, photovoltaic power generation, and grid dispatch instructions—is comprehensively integrated to dynamically optimize energy storage charging and discharging strategies, enabling the efficient utilization of renewable energy. In addition, the project introduces the “PV–Storage–DC–Flexible” technology, which leverages energy storage systems to construct a DC microgrid, reducing energy losses caused by multiple AC/DC conversions and directly lowering electricity costs and carbon emissions for enterprises.

2. Innovation in Intelligent Management and Control Systems:
The project is equipped with an enterprise-level digital energy management system. The system architecture is built on Spring Boot and Spring Cloud, forming a high-performance, high-throughput, and highly scalable Internet of Things (IoT) platform. It enables automated monitoring, data analysis, and intelligent control of the photovoltaic and energy storage systems, ensuring efficient utilization of renewable energy and refined equipment management. The system is supported by proprietary software copyrights, including Enterprise-Level Carbon Neutrality and Energy Management Project Database Software V1.0 and Enterprise Energy Management and Carbon Monitoring Intelligent Decision-Making System V1.0.

3. Innovation in the Business Model:
The project adopts an implementation model that combines Energy Performance Contracting (EPC/ESCO) with shared revenues from carbon assets and green certificates. Foshan Power Construction Green Energy Co., Ltd. fully undertakes the upfront costs of project design, construction, and subsequent operation and maintenance. The company shares energy-saving benefits as well as carbon asset and green certificate revenues with the host enterprise, significantly lowering the entry barrier for project implementation and enhancing the feasibility of cross-scenario applications.

Benefit Comparison and Impact Analysis:

In terms of overall benefits, this project achieves the synergistic enhancement of economic and social benefits through system-level optimization, significantly outperforming single-technology applications.

1. Economic Benefits
The implementation of this project reduces the proportion of electricity purchased from the grid that is generated by coal-fired power, while also enabling peak–valley electricity price arbitrage by charging the energy storage system during off-peak periods and discharging during peak periods. The project supplies 4.726 million kWh of clean electricity annually, saves 1,891.71 tonnes of standard coal per year, and reduces annual carbon dioxide emissions by 4,715.09 tonnes. It can save enterprises up to RMB 3.6 million in electricity costs each year. Overall, the project demonstrates a favorable return on investment, with an estimated static payback period of approximately five years (based on photovoltaic and energy storage costs as of December 2025). When considering equipment residual value, potential electricity price increases, and possible policy incentives, the actual payback period may be even shorter.

2. Social Benefits
One of the most significant contributions of this project is that it provides a complete, feasible, and replicable energy-saving and carbon-reduction solution for high energy-consuming industries such as building materials, steel, and cement. Traditionally, energy conservation and carbon reduction efforts in such enterprises have been largely limited to efficiency improvements of individual equipment or localized process optimizations, lacking a systematic and holistic approach. By leveraging “photovoltaic–energy storage integration” as its core technology, this project successfully establishes a comprehensive solution tailored for high energy-consuming enterprises. Beyond hardware system design and integration, the solution also delivers intelligent energy management strategies and an innovative business model. Other enterprises can draw on the project’s experience in technology selection, capacity configuration, operational modes, and investment assessment, and rapidly deploy similar projects according to their own conditions, thereby achieving energy-saving and carbon-reduction goals at relatively low cost.

Economic Returns:
Based on the distributed photovoltaic (PV) and user-side energy storage investment evaluation models of Foshan Power Construction Green Energy Co., Ltd., as well as actual project operating data, the economic performance of the project is as follows. The 4.6 MW distributed photovoltaic project of Guangdong Yuegou New Building Materials Industry Co., Ltd. was commissioned in June 2023. According to the PV project investment and return analysis model of Foshan Power Construction Green Energy Co., Ltd., the project is expected to generate an average annual operating revenue of RMB 2.1424 million and an average annual net profit of RMB 1.113 million. Based on actual operational data, the project achieved operating revenue of RMB 3.2742 million and a net profit of RMB 2.2519 million in 2024, outperforming the feasibility study projections. The 1 MW / 2 MWh energy storage project of Guangdong Yuegou New Building Materials Industry Co., Ltd. was commissioned in May 2024. According to the energy storage investment benefit estimation model of Foshan Power Construction Green Energy Co., Ltd., the project is expected to generate an average annual operating revenue of RMB 0.444 million and an average annual net profit of RMB 0.1298 million. Based on actual operating data, the project achieved operating revenue of RMB 0.4466 million during the period from July 2024 to June 2025, which is broadly consistent with the feasibility study estimates.
