Project Description:
Transpower (New Zealand's national grid operator) advanced its "Regulatory Control Period 4" (RCP4) proposal, which covers the investment plan for 2025-2030. In November 2024, the Commerce Commission released its draft decision on this plan, validating key smart grid investments.
The 2024/2025 roadmap focuses on "Resilience and Modernization." A highlight is the funding approval for the "Real-Time Pricing" (RTP) system enhancements and the digitization of asset management. Transpower is moving towards a data-driven maintenance model (using drones and sensors) to extend the life of aging assets while integrating new wind farms. This case demonstrates how a mature grid operator uses regulatory periods (starting 2025) to lock in funding for digital transformation and flexibility markets.
