At the core of visions for a smart grid is the transformation of the electric supply chain from a centralized, producer-controlled network to one that is less centralized and more consumer-interactive. This dynamic shift for the operation and automation of the power grid will provide for increased efficiency of energy usage and human resources. However, while policy makers and service providers have at least an introduction to smart grid concepts, most of their customers are significantly less aware of smart grid capabilities and their benefits.
This study, completed by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory for the APEC Energy Working Group, assesses the level of public knowledge about smart grids and smart grid technology, suggests a series of goals for progressing smart grid implementation, and outlines the remaining challenges facing smart grid deployment.
