Purpose of this curriculum:
The Energy Education Mobile is an interactive and unique learning experience designed for students in Grade 4 to learn more about Alberta’s energy resources and energy efficiency. Students participate in fun interactive activities that combine individual learning with group discussions. This is a free service offered by ATCO EnergySense.
Programs for implementing the curriculum
Complementing the curriculum
The Energy Education Mobile was developed by ATCO EnergySense in consultation with Alberta teachers to align with the Grade 4 Alberta curriculum. Topics are designed to tie in strongly with Science and Social Studies but also encourage inquiry-based learning and critical thinking.
The program complements the following specific curriculum areas:
● Science – Waste and Our World. Students will learn to identify examples of how energy is wasted and actions they and others can take to minimize waste.
● Social Studies – Alberta: A Sense of the Land. Students will learn to identify Alberta’s energy resources, where they are located and how those resources are used.
The Energy Education Mobile Experience The Energy Education Mobile will be travelling throughout the province to bring this free, one-of-a-kind experience directly to Alberta schools and communities. The Mobile is designed to accommodate 16 students at one time and takes about an hour to complete. Two ATCO EnergySense Co-ordinators facilitate the learning experience, answer questions and ensure students are engaged as they interact with the four learning stations. Prior to a visit by the Energy Education Mobile, support materials can be downloaded from our website to introduce topics to your students. www.atcoenergysense.com
The Learning Stations Alberta’s Energy Landscape Using a computer game, the students learn about the types of energy resources in Alberta including where the resource comes from, how it gets to us and how it is used. Electricity: Using it wisely The goal of this activity is to show students the actions they can take to reduce electricity use in their home. Students evaluate choices presented to them on flash cards, then using a handheld scanner, they select choices and a monitor displays their energy consumption and its effects. The students can enter and change their choices until they have found the set of actions that allow them to reach their goal. Heat: Keeping it in Using picture magnets, the students must identify the various areas in a house where heat can be lost and the ways to prevent heat loss. Energy Efficiency Detective The goal of this activity is to reinforce what the students have learned throughout the previous stations. In a small group setting, the challenge is to spot the difference between images that are energy efficient and those that are not.
