The Consortium for Building Energy Innovation (CBEI) (formerly the Greater Philadelphia Innovation Cluster and the Energy Efficient Buildings Hub) received $129 million from the Federal Government’s Energy Regional Innovation Cluster (E-RIC) Initiative. The award included $122 million from the U.S. DOE to create an Energy Innovation Hub to develop innovative energy efficient building technologies, designs and systems.
Located at The Navy Yard in Philadelphia, CBEI’s goals are to improve energy efficiency and operability and reduce carbon emissions of new and existing buildings, and to stimulate private investment and quality job creation in the Greater Philadelphia region, the larger Mid Atlantic region, and beyond. CBEI focuses on full spectrum retrofit of existing average size commercial and multi-family residential buildings.
CBEI is being evaluated by 5 metrics:
- Energy efficiency: Annual energy savings per square foot
- Scalability: Installed cost of energy saving retrofit
- Constraint: Ensure good indoor environment quality
- Regional Transformation: Industry cluster development
- Economic Development: New jobs created or retained
