FUNABASHI MORINO CITY is an eco-friendly town development project undertaken by MC and Nomura Real Estate at an old factory site of Asahi Glass Co., Ltd. in Kita-Honcho 1-chome, Funabashi City, Chiba Prefecture. In order to both share and make sensible use of space and energy, the project capitalizes on advanced environmental technology and ICT to lay the foundation for a low-carbon city, while at the same incorporating the traditional wisdom and ingenuity associated with housing, including the flow of wind and the relationships with greenery and with the sun.
In addition, fomenting a context in which positive relations exist between the town and the surrounding local community, while at the same time combining the benefits of positive intra-community engagement with those of technology and of nature, will not only serve to reduce the burden on the environment, but also contribute to the sustainable dynamism of the community itself. The expectation is that, as residents go about their daily lives, and as the “city” develops, a sense of solidarity and feeling of pride will also develop. This, in addition to the state-of-the-art infrastructure and the environmental considerations factored into the design, is what the project hopes will constitute “the hometown of the future”.
Brief outline of the low carbon town development plan
To implement Funabashi Morino City’s environmentally friendly concept, we have developed the community as an “Electric Vehicle (EV) Mobility
Town” incorporating EV and other infrastructure and introduced various environmental business elements from inside the company, including a
secure power supply system for use in the event of an emergency or disaster that combines lithium-ion batteries and solar power generation. We
have also introduced mechanisms that are geared to encourage residents’ awareness of the need to save energy such as by visualizing individual
household energy use and disseminating energy-saving rankings. The project has been effective in saving energy, and we believe that it can serve
as a blueprint for a low-carbon city.
