Constructed in 1970, Aorangi House was refurbished in 2008 and became one of New Zealand’s most energy smart buildings. The building won awards for its green and sustainable design, including World GBC Asia Pacific Leadership in Green Building Awards for Property Industry Awards Green Building Property Award of Merit (2010) and Leadership in Sustainable Design & Performance (2018).
Aorangi House demonstrates ways for aging buildings in its location, Wellington in New Zealand, to be transformed into sustainable buildings. One of the improvements taking place in Aorangi House is “the infusion of passive solar design principles”, such as natural ventilation, exposed thermal mass and external insulation, natural lighting. With other measures, the buildings saves 64% energy. Constant fine-tuning services also help the building to achieve its design performance targets.
In 2016, Aorangi House got the 5-star NABERSNZ rating because of being a recycled building. In 2018, the building become a 5.5 star NABERSNZ rating because it has 20% improvement of energy saving compared with 2016.
