The Marine Singapore Green Initiative is an incentive-based program that aims to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions in the marine shipping sector. The measures developed are based upon existing International Maritime Organization (IMO). The MSGI is composed of three separate programs:
- Green Ship Program
- Green Port Program
- Green Technology Program
Green Ship Program is targeted at Singapore-flagged ships that qualify by exceeding the IMO’s Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) and by having SOx scrubbers. Qualifying ships receive reduced initial registration fee and reduced annual tonnage tax.
Green Port Program is targeted towards ocean-going ships calling at Singapore that qualify by burning clean fuels within port limits and using approved abatement technologies. Qualifying ships receive reduced port dues.
Green Technology Program is targeted towards local maritime companies with qualifying projects on green technological solutions/systems. The program offers grants up to S$3M.
