Expanding Rail Transit in Hangzhou and Ningbo


CSR Hangzhou Rail Transit Co mainly produces Metro cars and also serves as a maintenance center. The plant has a total investment of 1.6 billion yuan (US$239 million) and covers 300,150 square meters in Xiaoshan District. In early 2014, CSR received an order to manufacture all 29 carriages for Hangzhou ‘s Metro Line 4 and most of the carriages for Line 2. The carriages for lines 5 and 6 are also expected to be made in the plant. The city’s subway network is expected to reach 190 kilometers by the end of next year. The Y-shaped Line 1 is the only one now open. It stretches 48 kilometers.

Metro Line 1 will soon be in use in central urban area of Ningbo. According to “The Master Plan of Ningbo (2004-2020)”, there will be several regional rail transit lines be built between central urban areas of Ningbo and the surrounding counties, making possible an “one-hour traffic circle” over next few years.

The Ningbo regional rail connects the central urban areas and the surrounding counties. It is more efficient, low-carbon and comfortable compared with the traditional road transport. According to the City Planning Bureau, there will be at least four regional rail lines in Ningbo, namely: a line starting from Ningbo East Railway Station, going along Xiaoshan-Ningbo Railway, through the center of Yuyao and ending at Mazhu; a line from Shuangqiao Station to Zhougangbei station, going through the center of Cixi; a line from Chenpodu station to the center of Fenghua and Ninghai; a line from Hengxi station through Xiangshan county to Shipu.
